What are the first steps to undertake upon my arrival in Quebec?

What is a lease?

Is there an ideal time to move?

Culturally, the vast majority of leases in Quebec are renewed on July 1. This frees up a great deal of apartments and increases your chances of finding your ideal place. What is the best Montreal neighbourhood to live in?

Downtown, without a doubt! It includes Shaughnessy Village, the Quartier des Spectacles, and Griffintown. In short, everything you could need: shopping, restaurants, entertainment, etc.

Is the cost of living expensive in Montreal?

The cost of living is much lower in Montreal than it is in France, the United Kingdom, or the United States, as well as other Canadian cities like Toronto and Vancouver. Also note that electricity, heating, and Internet are included in your rent!

Is French spoken in Montreal?

French is the official language of Quebec and is therefore most often spoken in Montreal. That said, don’t be surprised to also hear conversations in English, since downtown is the diversity hub of the city!

Is a car essential to get around in Montreal?

Does Montreal have many green spaces?

Downtown is at the bottom of Mount Royal, which is Montreal’s largest green space. You can go for runs, or walk your dog on the many trails that lead to heritage sites, like the popular St. Joseph’s Oratory. You can also enjoy the Lachine Canal located near several Devimco projects.

Is there an ideal proportion of income that should go to rent?

It is typically recommended to spend, at most, a third of your monthly income on rent in order to remain financially comfortable. This proportion will allow you to cover your recurring expenses while allowing you to enjoy life.
